Dhaka, Jan 26 (UNB) – A Volkswagen rally will be held in the capital tomorrow.


The Volkswagen Club of Bangladesh, a fun club of Beetle owners, has arranged rally, second in its kind in the country.


The rally will start from Manik Mia Avenue at about 11am and finish at Jatiya Smrity Soudha, Savar via Ashulia at about 12:30pm.


Sponsored by Rahimafrroz, producer of Lucas batteries in Bangladesh, at least 50 Volkswagens are expected to participate in the rally.


The objectives of the club are confidence building of the owners and drivers, and encourage them to preserve the classic car, which also gives a positive image at home and abroad.


German car Volkswagen came to Bangladesh in the mid-1960s. It was a car of the emerging professional middle-class society, including university teachers, engineers, doctors, businessmen and military officers.


At present some 200 Beetles are alive in the country. In the 60s and 70s it literally dominated the streets of Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Comilla and other districts town.


Beetle was the first model of Volkswagenwerk AG. It is currently being produced in Mexico. Mexico has also introduced the new generation hi-tech Beetle which is marketed in the United States, Europe and Australia.
